Minutes of meetings, 1955-1974.

Record group RG 85-56 consists of the minutes of the meetings of the Michigan Board of Medicine for the years 1955-1974. The Board meets semi-annually, unless special cases require them to meet more frequently. Cases of narcotics abuse, abortion, and malpractice are heard by the Board. Decisions are made by Board members to either revoke or suspend the licenses of practicing physicians for violations. Hearings are also conducted which deal with course work and internship requirements for doctors in Michigan and for doctors who received degrees in other countries. In addition, cases of physicians from other states who would like to acquire licensing in the state of Michigan are heard by the Board.

The Michigan Board of Medicine was created by Act 237, Public Acts of 1899 and codified in Act 368, Public Acts of 1978. The primary function of the Board is to provide guidelines for conducting examinations and granting licenses to individuals who want to engage in the practice of allopathic medicine.
